Arriving in Dominica
Most air passengers use Douglas–Charles Airport (DOM), while regional ferries may arrive at a port such as Roseau. The right onward plan depends on arrival point, accommodation, luggage, party size and road conditions.
Do not confuse Dominica with the Dominican Republic when searching. Confirm the airport code, island and final destination before paying.

Dominica airport overview
| Airport | Code | Location | Best context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Douglas–Charles Airport | DOM | North-east coast near Marigot | Principal airport for scheduled passenger arrivals |
| Canefield Airport | DCF | Near Roseau on the west coast | Smaller facility; never assume it serves your planned flight |
Always use the airport shown on the actual ticket. Airline routes and operating arrangements change, so this guide does not list a supposedly permanent route map.
Douglas–Charles Airport (DOM)
DOM is on the north-east coast. Calibishie and other north-eastern communities are generally the most convenient of the main visitor bases, while Portsmouth requires a journey across the north and Roseau lies across the mountainous interior on the south-west coast.
To Calibishie
Usually the simplest of these three transfers because Calibishie is also in the north-east. Confirm the precise property and pickup arrangement.
To Portsmouth
Plan a road transfer towards the north-west. A pre-arranged taxi can reduce uncertainty, particularly after a connecting flight.
To Roseau
The route crosses steep terrain. Avoid relying on a straight-line distance or unsupported exact time; allow flexibility and tell the driver about luggage or child-seat needs.
Canefield Airport (DCF)
Canefield is near Roseau but is a much smaller airport. Its convenient location does not mean it will serve your itinerary. Verify the operating airport directly from the booking and do not plan around DCF unless your confirmed service uses it.
Arriving by ferry
Regional passenger ferries may connect Dominica with neighbouring islands, with Roseau an important arrival point. Services, ports, check-in requirements and sea conditions can change, so verify the current operator timetable and official instructions before travel.
- Check the exact port. Do not assume every sailing uses the same terminal.
- Allow for disruption. Weather and sea conditions can affect ferry operations.
- Confirm luggage rules. Limits and handling differ from airlines.
- Arrange onward transport. Tell the provider your vessel and scheduled arrival point.
Airport and port transfer options
Pre-booked transfer
Useful for first visits, late arrivals, families, groups or remote accommodation. Confirm meeting point, total charge, cancellation terms and luggage capacity.
Licensed taxi
A practical choice when you do not want to drive. Confirm the destination and fare basis before departure and use recognised services.
Hotel transfer
Some properties arrange pickup directly or through a partner. Ask what is included and provide accurate flight or ferry details.
Rental car
Best for confident drivers wanting flexibility. Confirm where the vehicle is collected, since arrangements may involve delivery or an off-airport meeting point.
Public transport
Local transport may not align with flights, luggage or door-to-door needs. Do not depend on it without checking the current route and operating pattern.
Renting a car in Dominica
Dominica drives on the left. Roads can be steep, narrow, winding and affected by weather. A car adds freedom, but it is not automatically the best choice for every traveller.
- Confirm your driving licence, local permit and identification requirements.
- Read insurance, excess, deposit, fuel, mileage and roadside-assistance terms.
- Choose a vehicle suitable for passengers, luggage and planned roads.
- Inspect and record the vehicle’s condition at collection.
- Check parking arrangements at each accommodation.

Choose your base before booking transport
The best transfer depends on where you stay. Compare the capital, north-west and north-east in the Roseau vs Portsmouth vs Calibishie guide, then review seasonal weather in the Best Time to Visit Dominica guide.
